Website guru Kieran Lacey and Dragon Deputy Manager Tom Cutler were invited to the Slug and Lettuce on Greyfriars Road in Cardiff to get a little taste of the food and drink on offer. Both have offered their unique take on what they thought of the restaurant.
Atmosphere is something that can make or break a restaurant. The food can be the best you’ve ever tasted, but if the location feels wrong or off-putting then it can turn a great meal into a poor one. Thankfully this is not something one need worry about at the Slug and Lettuce in Cardiff. The bar is well lit, the tables have a touch of class with candles lit, and the décor is welcoming.
A big factor in the good atmosphere is the high quality of service. Upon entry to the restaurant you are welcomed by a member of staff, whom were all very friendly and seemed to genuinely care about their customers. They’ll guide you to your table, and take drinks orders if you are ready. When ordering food the staff often offered upgrades to your meal which, although the option wasn’t taken on this occasion, did enhance the menu even further.
Once you have received your food, which does come in a reasonable amount of time, despite how busy the restaurant can get, the staff will regularly come back and check to make sure that your food was of the high standard they expect it to be. Some may even argue they checked back a little too much, although it was a nice change as many restaurants won’t even check the once.
The food itself was indeed of the high standard the staff expected. As a student perhaps my regular fast food trips and cheap pub lunches have gotten my taste buds a little too used to lower standard of food than I should allow. The Slug and Lettuce reminded me just what good food tastes like. Of course, the high quality of food comes at a price, more on that later, however it makes up for that price in taste. Everything was cooked to perfection, and despite the staff giving me the opportunity on a number of occasions to find something wrong with my meal to complain about, I simply couldn’t.
Price is a difficult aspect to judge. Ordinarily the rating would have been much lower than the 8 I gave, because as previously mentioned, you really do pay for the quality. I think the price is fair given the quality of the food itself, but it is most definitely out of the price range for the average student. Except, that is, for Mondays. On Monday, every Monday, Slug and Lettuce offer 50% off of all food. You want a burger? 50% off. A salad? 50% off. A 10oz ribeye steak? 50% off. This not only makes the prices well within a student budget, but frankly a steal. When you can have a full steak dinner of the high quality of the Slug and Lettuce with a pint for around £10, it makes you wonder why anyone would go anywhere else on a Monday.
As well as this fantastic deal on a Monday, from Thursday-Saturday you can also get cocktails on a 2-for-1 deal. As with the food, ordinarily the cocktails would likely be a little out of the price range of the average student, however the 2-for-1 deal again makes the prices very reasonable, especially with the very wide range of cocktails on offer. If you’re not a fan of the clubbing scene, this offers a great and a more relaxed and classy option for a night out in Cardiff.
Ok for the most part this is actually one of the establishment’s main strengths apart from one conservatory area that felt very out of place with the whole restaurants look. Not the end of the world, I know, but I feel it’s worth mentioning for the purpose of full disclosure. The rest of The Slug and Lettuce looks very different to this conservatory looking area with bright green chairs that clash with the rest of the décor. Whereas the bigger areas of the restaurant include a sophisticated, but not too sophisticated bar that will make anybody feel classy and relaxed in this refined ethos.
There is not much I can say about the service other than it was one of the best I’d ever had the pleasure of dealing with. They are so attentive and polite you will feel welcome and not only that but also like you're getting your money’s worth too.
Overall The Slug and Lettuce is a welcome addition to Cardiff’s restaurant scene and it's not just exclusive to Cardiff, it's also a chain around the UK so if you're not from Cardiff don’t worry.
This is probably the most important part, I think for somebody wanting to know if they should go to the Slug and Lettuce. Well you're not going to be disappointed, I am happy to report the food is beyond amazing a word has not been invented yet for how deliciously fantastic the food is. Not only is it so tasty but they are not afraid to take risks and I love that. I ordered a burger that was no ordinary burger. This burger had Mac and Cheese in it. WHAT IS THIS MADDNESS!?!?!?!!.
It was a risk well taken as its an amazing combination and is such an innovative thing. Not to mention the pudding I had which was a vanilla ice cream with a cookie base that was to die for.
Now onto the drink. I had a Mocktail that was as if a whole array of delicious flavours shared a flat together. Fresh lime, peach puree, cranberry juice and Schweppes Lemonade. It was an absolute taste sensation.
Another thing I feel is really important to mention is the 50% off Mondays deal, every Monday 50% off!!. I’m going to say now students or anybody in general who listen to Dragon and read our blog, this is an offer not to be taken for granted I urge you all you head down there on a Monday with your friends or family and gave these people your custom because they really deserve it not just for the food and service but for this offer too.
